For what it’s worth, the 400mbps FireWire standard used on these early iPods is still faster than USB 2.0 at 480mbps. The main reason being that FireWire is a full duplex connection, so it transmits and receives data at the same time. USB 2.0 is half duplex though, so it must wait for transmitted data to complete before it can receive data and vice versa. This gives FireWire a significant speed advantage, however USB 3.0 will be full duplex and otherwise defeat this problem.
@Hal566 Players would have become smaller and slimmer, for sure. Especially once flash memory became the dominant storage medium. What Apple did with the iPod though pushed the industry for portable media devices forward by several years, so I think they did “find the recipe” with the first iPod. I think although a lot of manufacturers didn’t copy the design, there’s a lot of manufacturers that were influenced one way or another by it.
@CruisinTR true alot of players were chunky etc. Technology is constantly getting more slimmer, sleeker and can do more as more advancements are made in each respective company. Apple didn’t create this spirit of advancement. Just because its possible apple did something 1st does not mean anything. Those advancements would have happened anyway. Also no other mp3 player follows apple’s recipe or style.
applefag ftw
Steve Jobs still looks healthy here. I wouldn’t be surprised if this year is Steve’s last year on earth.
